November Member of the Month Spotlight – Amy Zamieroski

November Member of the Month Spotlight – Amy Zamieroski

I am so excited to announce that the November Member of the Month is Amy Zamieroski!

Amy has been with Forever Fit SCV for almost 4 years now and she’s been consistently killin’ it since Day 1! Amy came to us because she was tired of being another face in the crowd at the ‘big box gyms’ and has truly thrived during her time with us.

Amy is a people person; one of the warmest, sweetest, most caring people you will ever meet! She really thrives with the support of her friends and family, and that’s one of the reasons she’s been SO SUCCESSFUL at Forever Fit SCV. She originally came in with her best friend Kelley, and has made so many more lasting friendships, which keeps her excited to train on a daily basis.

Amy has had her share of obstacles, namely pre-existing ‘bad knees’. She’s worked hard to correct these issues and continues to make progress every single day. She one of the most positive people I know and understands that Fitness is Forever and not something you can work on for a week and be set for the rest of your life. She has been, and continues to be, a positive role model for her family and is the ‘fun mom’ we’d all love to have!

And don’t get me started on how giving Amy is! She has been volunteering for years and teaching Sunday school at her church, which takes way more time and patience than most of us are comfortable with. But Amy does it willingly and loves shaping the minds of our youth!

We are so proud of what Amy continues to accomplish and are so happy to be with her on her journey.  We were able to able to catch up with Amy to find out how and why she’s been so successful and here’s what she had to say:

Craig: When did you start training at Forever Fit SCV?

Amy: I had been working out at one of the larger gyms in the area, and was not happy.  Everything from the constantly broken machines to the bad music they played bothered me.  When I heard about Forever Fit SCV, I was eager for the change.  After the first class, I knew that I had found exactly what I’d been looking for.  In one word, Forever Fit is FUN!  Not a lot of people can say that about where they workout.  Craig is simply the best coach  …ever!  The community there is so friendly and happy.  The workouts are challenging and they regularly change, so no boredom.  I don’t understand why anyone would waste their time and money working out anywhere else!

Craig: What has made you so successful at Forever Fit SCV?

Amy: I’m happy there so I want to go.  There are very few mornings that I feel like I’m dragging myself to the gym.  I am smiling and laughing 90% of the time that I am there!  Also, Craig is a great motivator.  He teaches me ways to get around any body pains I may have that day, and he is always encouraging.  I don’t think I’ve ever heard him speak a negative word.

Craig: What is the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome during your fitness transformation?

Amy: I have bad knees.  When I was at my previous gym, nobody really cared if I did the moves right or not.  Now, I am watched over and corrected or complimented all the time.  Craig is always giving me different alternatives if my knees hurt, as well as different exercises to try that will strengthen my knees to help alleviate the pain.  Right now, I’m practically pain free!  And my squat looks pretty darn good!!

Craig: What advice would you offer to others who are just starting out on their fitness journey or have hit a road-block?

Amy: Get up, put your pants on, and get your booty to Forever Fit.  It will change your life!

Craig: What drives you to ‘KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES’?

Amy: My age!  I don’t want to grow old and be one of those people who can’t pick up a pencil they’ve dropped on the floor, who grunt and groan every time they get out of the chair, who is winded when they climb a flight of stairs, who can’t go for a bike ride, etc. etc.  That will never be me!   The variety of moves Craig challenges us with every week helps to keep every muscle in my body strong.  I love that feeling!  And it doesn’t come in a bottle. I have to work for it. At the end of the day, it is up to me to get the job done, but the support, the environment, the challenges, and the community of Forever Fit SCV are exactly what I need to help me be my best.   Thank you Forever Fit!!

KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES Amy!!!

October Member of the Month Spotlight – Joni Stiman

October Member of the Month Spotlight – Joni Stiman

I am so excited to announce that the October Member of the Month is Joni Stiman!

Joni has been with Forever Fit SCV for almost 5 years now and she’s been working hard and super consistent since Day 1! She was the winner of our very first Transformation Challenge and was so surprised with her results from simply following the program.

Joni has had an amazing support system since she started. She initially started with a great friend and, during her time with us, has inspired her daughter, husband and a few co-workers to join in as well. Her determination of a healthy lifestyle and love for her new found fitness level continues to inspire those around her every single day.

Joni has had to persevere through many obstacles and things haven’t always been easy for her. Whether its her crazy work schedule (she’s a high school teacher, God bless her!), a surgery or her amazing grandchildren, Joni has continued to make her fitness a priority and truly understands what it means to KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES!

We are so proud of what Joni continues to accomplish and are so happy to be on this journey with her.  We were able to able to catch up with Joni to find out how and why she’s been so successful and here’s what she had to say:

Craig: When did you start training at Forever Fit SCV?

Joni: I began to train at Forever Fit SCV because I was turning 50 and I felt that I was not prioritizing my health and I needed to.  I came to the realization that the best thing that I could do for the ones that I love was to take care of myself, so I could continue to care for them.  I was more tired at the end of the day than I felt I should be at my age and with 3 grandchildren under 5, I need energy!! I already knew Craig and had great respect for him, so I knew I could count on him to guide me to where I needed to be.

Craig: What has made you so successful at Forever Fit SCV?

Joni: Forever Fit SCV is for all people at any age and at any fitness level.  In the beginning, I struggled with every workout, but I enjoyed them.  I was successful because what I was doing was working.  I immediately felt success, lost weight, became strong and most importantly felt better and empowered to change my life.  I have ups and down, but for 5 years now I have not regretted any workout or any commitment I have made to improve my life at Forever Fit SCV.

Craig: What is the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome during your fitness transformation?

Joni: The biggest obstacle for me is when I find myself going back to lazy or unhealthy habits. I am in this for the long haul and I plan to prioritize health and fitness forever.  When life gets busy, I avoid making excuses and jump back into healthy habits as soon as I can.

Craig: What advice would you offer to others who are just starting out on their fitness journey or have hit a road-block?

Joni: I never believed this before, but it is as simple as making a decision to commit to it.  There are no quick fixes that last forever and the only way to feel good is to decide to take care of ourselves everyday in the best way we can.  The rest of the journey is to continue to make that decision every day.  The goal is not perfection, but continued progress.

Craig: What drives you to ‘KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES’?

Joni: When I have made changes and tried new things,  I find myself happier and healthier.  The people at Forever Fit SCV and the inspirational coaches keep me coming to workouts even when I am tired and really not into it.  I always leave with a great feeling and more energy!  My friends and family have noticed this and several of them now work out with me at Forever Fit.  My support system continues to grow and that is what drives me.

KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES Joni!!!

September Member of the Month Spotlight – Tracey Cohn

September Member of the Month Spotlight – Tracey Cohn

I am so excited to announce that the September Member of the Month is Tracey Cohn!

Tracey has been with Forever Fit SCV for over 2 years now and she’s been working hard and super consistent since Day 1!  She is an amazing elementary school teacher that pours her heart and soul into the kids she teaches, but still makes her family and her own health a priority.

Tracey first started with us during a transformation challenge and instantly made changes to her nutrition. I still remember her coming in and telling me excitedly how the positive changes she was making were carrying over to her family and how great the all felt.  I could not have been more proud of her for leading the way and being the positive example at home as well as the gym.

Tracey continues to be a supportive, guiding light inside and outside of the gym.  She is always there to lend an ear to a fellow teacher during a training session or congratulate another Forever Fit SCV Family member on their achievement.  She is still striving to improve her push-ups (something she’s been focused on since day 1) and we know she’ll get there because good things come to great people.

We are so proud of what Tracey continues to accomplish and are so happy to be on this journey with her.  We were able to able to catch up with Tracey to find out how and why she’s been so successful and here’s what she had to say:

Craig: When did you start training at Forever Fit SCV?

Tracey: To look and feel better about myself.

Craig: What has made you so successful at Forever Fit SCV?

Tracey: People and friends that come every day.

Craig: What is the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome during your fitness transformation?

Tracey: Life, trying to turn everyday frustrations into something positive.

Craig: What advice would you offer to others who are just starting out on their fitness journey or have hit a road-block?

Tracey: Never give up!

Craig: What drives you to ‘KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES’?

Tracey: Wanting to look and feel better about myself.

KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES Tracey!!!

June Member Of The Month Spotlight – Pam Bird

June Member of the Month Spotlight – Pam Bird

I am so excited to announce that the June Member of the Month is Pam Bird!

Pam has been with Forever Fit SCV for 2 years now and her progress has been so amazing!  When Pam first came to us, she could barely squat, now she’s dropping down lower than most people half her age and doing it while holding a 40 pound sandbag!  I still remember the day she came in and told me she was able to squat down to rearrange things under her desk, something she had never been able to do before!

Pam is a thinker, which means she strictly analyzes every movement she does at the gym. She is able to focus on what she’s doing to ensure she’s moving efficiently and safely and she takes guidance very well.  She is truly a coach’s dream!

Mimi, as her grandkids call her, is one of the most genuine people you will ever meet.  She is kind, yet firm and always tells it like it is in the nicest possible way.  She has a way of sincerely building up everyone around her which has made her a favorite among the Forever Fit SCV Family.  She’s even brought in her husband Dave (who’s legally blind) to train with us and held his hand the whole time, cheered him on and helped him start living a healthier lifestyle.  If saints really live on earth, them Pam’s one of them!

We are so proud of what Pam continues to accomplish and are so happy to be on this journey with her.  We were able to able to catch up with her to find out how and why she’s been so successful and here’s what she had to say:

Craig: When did you start training at Forever Fit SCV?

Pam: My daughter invited me to one of the Saturday Bring A Friend classes.  Though I did walk on the treadmill, I did not do any strength building.  I was really surprised at how weak I had become!

Craig: What has made you so successful at Forever Fit SCV?

Pam: My trainer Craig has successfully pushed me to try.  My husband encouraged me to continue trying though I was sore.  My daughter and son encouraged me because they believe I can do it!  My classmates encourage me to continue.  I just can’t lose with this type of support!

Craig: What is the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome during your fitness transformation?

Pam: Honestly, I hate to admit this, but it is me!  My self doubt, which hinders me every day.  I have to keep pushing to keep going each time I think I can’t go on….I push to keep going because I am so much better off physically and mentally.  I’d never want to disappoint my family.

Craig: What advice would you offer to others who are just starting out on their fitness journey or have hit a road-block?

Pam: DON’T STOP!  It is too easy to do….keep pushing to better health and a longer, more meaningful life.

Craig: What drives you to ‘KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES’?

Pam: It is simply this: 4 boys and 1 girl that call me Mimi!

1 boy and 1 girl that call me Mom as well as 1 boy and 1 girl that mall me mother-in-law.

1 man that calls me his wife (who is my best friend and cheerleader).

Each one of them are the lifeblood that drives me to keep trying to make meaningful changes that will help me stay healthier for a longer time.  Believe me, I know there is much work I need to do.  Then, not lastly, but additionally, Craig, who carefully, honestly and firmly reminds me and pushes me to keep moving toward better changes!

KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES Pam!!!

March Member of the Month Spotlight – Brenda Keller

March Member of the Month Spotlight – Brenda Keller

Brenda Keller 1

I am so excited to announce that the March Member of the Month is Brenda Keller!

Brenda has been with Forever Fit SCV for over 2 years and has made some major strides (pun intended) in that time.  She continues to set meaningful and achievable goals, challenging herself to get to the ‘next level’.

I can honestly say that Brenda is one of the most caring and encouraging people to ever walk through the Forever Fit SCV doors.  She has a genuine interest in the success of everyone around her and continues to be a role model for many newcomers, FF SCV Family Members……and even her elementary school students!

Brenda Keller 2

Brenda is an avid runner and will be attacking the Los Angeles Marathon this month, a goal that she set for herself last year and has worked extremely hard to achieve.  When she had a leg injury last year, she could have thrown in the towel and quit, but she took care of herself, kept her eye on the prize and continued to make strides (pun intended, there it is again!) toward her ultimate goal.

You can always find Brenda and her bestie Lisa hamming it up on Saturday mornings after a long run.  Even after a looooooong run, Brenda still has the energy to train hard and support her husband Gordon as they push each other to be the Best They Can Be
We are so proud of what Brenda continues to accomplish and can’t wait to see her accomplish her marathon goal later this month!

Brenda Keller 4

We were able to able to catch up with her to find out how and why she’s been so successful and here’s what she had to say:

Craig: When did you start training at Forever Fit SCV?

Brenda: After being invited by Lisa Kimura and enjoying the workout, Gordon and I decided to work out at FF together.  The family atmosphere and individual attention were major factors in my choice.

Craig: What has made you so successful at Forever Fit SCV?

Brenda: I have felt successful at FF because Craig takes an interest in the total me: physically, nutritionally, and emotionally.  The atmosphere at FF is so conducive to a healthy workout.  The encouragement is endless and the inspiration pushes me to try harder and “lift heavier weights”.

Craig: What is the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome during your fitness transformation?

Brenda: My biggest obstacle is myself…am I working hard enough, am I eating in a healthy manner.  The nutritional advice that Craig offers helps me to focus on making positive choices.

Craig: What advice would you offer to others who are just starting out on their fitness journey or have hit a road-block?

Brenda: An accountability partner is essential.  Gordon and I encourage one another to go at 7pm (which can be difficult after a long day at work).  We talk each other into going and doing our best.

Brenda Keller 5

Craig: What drives you to ‘KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES’?

Brenda: My biggest reason is my husband Gordon.  He has had a few health issues and we both realize that consistent exercise has helped us stay healthy.  We can squat, plank, and lunge!   My other reason is a goal I am striving for…running a marathon.  Meeting that goal means working out, running, and maintaining good nutrition.

KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES Brenda!!!

January Member of the Month Spotlight – Tommy Kimmerle

January Member of the Month Spotlight – Tommy Kimmerle

Tommy looking sharp

I am so excited to announce that the January Member of the Month is Tommy Kimmerle!

Tommy has been with Forever Fit SCV for over 3 years and has been a force to be reckoned with ever since!  He keeps us all on our toes with his witty humor and continues to get stronger every time he walks through the door.

A former athlete, Tommy is no stranger to hard work.  And though his baseball days are over, he still shines playing softball and is now hitting even more home runs throwing more people out thanks to his new found strength! He’s even found that coming to the gym to train before a game helps him play better and have more power.

tommy-collage

Tommy’s got a wit and charm that always puts everyone at ease.  He’s always willing to lend a hand when needed and give some an extra push to help them get through a workout.  And we even have a special bond because we both ‘speak fluent movie quotes’!

We are so proud of what Tommy continues to accomplish and can’t wait to see what the future holds for him!

Tommy getting it done!

We were able to able to catch up with him to find out how and why he’s been so successful and here’s what he had to say:

Craig: When did you start training at Forever Fit SCV?

Tommy: I started out at a bring-a-friend workout a few years ago and learned quickly what an awesome environment Forever Fit SCV was to work out in.  I’ve been hooked ever since.

Craig: What has made you so successful at Forever Fit SCV?

Tommy: Craig! Duh…well, mostly Craig.  He pushes me to be at my best.  Always willing to hand me extra weight or another band, or getting me to try new variations and exercises.  The atmosphere also contributes to success.  Having such great people to work out with, including my wonderful wife, really makes a difference and makes working out far more fun.

img_5282img_2451

Craig: What is the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome during your fitness transformation?

Tommy: Definitely forcing myself to eat better. I still treat myself from time to time, but my most prominent cut was to fried foods (especially french fries).  It’s so sad because they’re SO delicious.  But cutting down on them really made a difference.

Craig: What advice would you offer to others who are just starting out on their fitness journey or have hit a road-block?

Tommy: Hit the ground running.  Force yourself to get into it (or back into it), because that’s the hardest part.  But once you’re in and it becomes part of your routine, it becomes easier to keep it going.  And trust Craig, he always knows what’s best.

Craig: What drives you to ‘KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES’?

Tommy: Seeing results.  Once you see that your hard work is paying off it motivates you to keep it going.  And Craig always says to KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES.  And like I said, Craig knows best!

KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES Tommy!!!

October Member of the Month Spotlight – Herve Guillard

October Member of the Month Spotlight – Herve Guillard

Herve Guillard

I am so excited to announce that the October Member of the Month is Herve Guillard!

Herve has been with Forever Fit SCV for over 2 years and he has made some major changes over that time!

Herve first started with Forever Fit SCV during our New Year, New You Transformation Challenge in 2014 and truly started creating a healthier body.  In just 3 months, he was able to drop his cholesterol by 74 points, which is no easy feat for a chef!  Since that time, he has worked hard to balance his love for food and a healthy body.

Between his busy schedule as co-owner of Culinary Wonders, teaching Culinary Arts at College of the Canyons and raising a family, Herve still manages to make it to his training sessions.  5am, 4:00pm, 5:30pm….it doesn’t matter, Herve makes it a priority.

We are so proud of what Herve continues to accomplish and can’t wait to see what the future holds for this amazing person!  We were able to able to catch up with him to find out how and why he’s been so successful and here’s what he had to say:

Craig: When did you start training at Forever Fit SCV?

Herve: Because going to a regular gym wasn’t working for me, I needed the push of having a trainer.

Craig: What has made you so successful at Forever Fit SCV?

Herve: First, Craig’s relentless and friendly coaching – it’s a fine line to motivate without intimidating or demoralizing and he has mastered it.

Second, the friendly community of FFSCV, everyone encourages each other and celebrates small successes.  There is no competition, but a sense of camaraderie in person and online.

Third, learning to be gentle on myself and not expect the moon; small steps, not giant leaps.

img_2769herve1

Craig: What is the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome during your fitness transformation?

Herve: Making time in my schedule to make it to training sessions.  Loving food and being constantly exposed to it. Making the right choices.

Craig: What advice would you offer to others who are just starting out on their fitness
journey or have hit a road-block?

Herve: Patience! Results come by steady effort and learning new behaviors, not overnight. Be OK with who you are.  I’ll never be a lean machine, but I am definitely healthier and stronger than I was 2 years ago before starting at FFSCV.

Craig: What drives you to ‘KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES’?

Herve: My kid! I want to be healthy for him and be around to see him grow, able to chase the ball and play. Chasing a 5 year old on the beach is good cardio!

KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES Herve!!!

August Member of the Month Spotlight – Kelly O’Keefe

August Member of the Month Spotlight

Kelly O’Keefe

Kelly O'Keefe

I am so excited to announce that the March Member of the Month is Kelly O’Keefe!

Kelly just celebrated her 3 year anniversary with Forever Fit SCV and she has made some major changes over that time!

She first came to Forever Fit SCV with her husband Lance to participate in the New Year, New You Transformation Challenge and to say the two were competitive was an understatement.  I remember each one looking the others shoulder as they did their body fat measurements to see who was lower.  That competitive nature is one of the things that has made Kelly so successful during her journey.  She never backs down from a challenge and always gives her all.

Kelly and LanceKelly - MAX Lunge

Kelly also happens to be one of the most caring and giving people I know.  Whether it’s traveling to Haiti to help out at orphanages, volunteering at Real Life Church or creating memorable parties for family and friends, Kelly is always so giving of herself and makes others around her feel special.

Kelly’s journey from fun-loving, care-free wife to mom has been so exciting to watch and she has learned that exercise and fitness plays a key role in her helping her help others. I was able to catch up with her to find out how and why she’s been so successful and here’s what she had to say:

Craig: When did you start training at Forever Fit SCV?

Kelly: I started training at Forever Fit SCV a LONG time ago (before a baby) to engage in an activity with my spouse that would yield a positive investment. I found that working out could do this for us! We could spend quality time together, get in a workout, and build community.  AND I wanted to feel fit, fit into those “skinny jeans” and really just feel confident to life my best life.

Craig: What has made you so successful at Forever Fit SCV?

Kelly: A few things, one is the open door policy that Forever Fit has. When I need something more I know I can always ask for it.  A perfect example of this is the advanced strength training class or the 5am class time that is now offered. The answer is always NO unless you ask. The second thing is the sense of community which has been really been crucial to keeping me accountable. And finally, the emphasis that Forever Fit SCV puts on creating changes that are not just immediate, but changes that are everlasting lifestyle changes.

Craig: What is the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome during your fitness transformation?

Kelly: Myself! I’m an all or nothing kind of person and I want immediate results so staying motivated is challenging.

Kelly O'Keefe Before and AfterKelly O'Keefe Band Dead Lift

Craig: What advice would you offer to others who are just starting out on their fitness journey or have hit a road-block?

Kelly: Think of every decision you make today as an investment. What will the return yield in a day, week, year, or years from now?

Craig: What drives you to ‘KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES’?

Kelly: The desire to live my best life today, not tomorrow!  I want to be a light in dark places and I can’t do this without my health in check. If I don’t feel good, I can’t show up for my calling!

KEEP MAKIN’ CHANGES Kelly!!!

Coach’s Corner – August 2016

Tech Neck…..yep, it’s a real thing!

Are you reading this on your phone or tablet right now? If so….pick your head up! 🙂

In this information age, we are killing our posture with all of the handheld devices and computers.  They’ve even coined a new term for our bad posture, Tech Neck!

According to Kenneth K. Hansraj, MD, it’s a real thing.

“We did a study on the issue of poor posture and how it affects you, especially when you’re on a cell phone or smart device,” says Hansraj, chief of spine surgery at New York Spine Surgery & Rehabilitative Medicine. “It’s a lot of load, an amazing amount of weight to be carrying around your neck.”

Not convinced? Well get this. “When your spine is in neutral position, the head weighs about 10-12 pounds,” he says. “At 15 degrees [forward], the neck sees 27 pounds. At 45 degrees, it sees 49 pounds, and at 60 degrees, it’s 60 pounds.”

TechNeck

That’s a whopping 60 pounds of weight on muscles and nerves that are meant to handle 10-12 pounds of stress, and that can do a lot of damage over time.  I can’t tell you how sad I get seeing teenagers walking around looking at the ground, not even having the strength to walk while looking out in front of them.

Despite the importance of having good posture, most of us don’t do anything to improve it. We go about our lives with hunched backs and imbalanced hips, and deal with pain because we think it’s normal.

Living with bad posture can be a dangerous thing. The muscle and ligament imbalances that result from poor alignment can lead to all sorts of problems:

  • Chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Foot, knee, hip, and back injuries
  • Headaches
  • Stiffness
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle atrophy and weakness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Digestion issues
  • Impingement and nerve compression
  • Sciatica
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

Dr. Kelly Herta-Himes, one of the top chiropractors in the

Santa Clarita Valley, says that many of the problems people complain about on a daily basis (sore/painful wrists, sore/painful shoulders, etc.) are caused by poor posture.

So what can we do about it?

Well, let’s face it, you’re not going to stop using your phone or tablet.  But there are some ways you can relieve the stress on your neck while using them.  Dr. Herta-Himes suggests getting a plate holder from the dollar store and using it to prop up your tablet on a table or your lap.  You can also put a pillow on your lap when laying in bed or prop your feet up and rest our forearms on your knees when holding your device.

We can also strengthen the neck by doing some simple neck nods and rocking.  Here is a great video demonstration on how to do neck nods (the video talks about relieving tension for headaches, but gives a great demonstration on neck nods).

GI Joe

As G.I. Joe said, knowing is half the battle. Don’t let Tech Neck cause problems for you down the road.  Use the simple tips and exercise above to stay strong and healthy.
