Are You Mentally Tough?

‘Cause sometimes you just feel tired,
Feel weak, and when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up.
But you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength
And just pull that sh!+ out of you and get that motivation to not give up
And not be a quitter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse.

The above passage is from the beginning of ‘Til I Collapse, a new Eminem song (not sure if it is really new, but it’s new to me).

Though I don’t listen to Eminem all the time, I do find that he has some very inspirational lines in many of the songs that he writes.  The one above is my favorite to date because I think it applies to the challenges that we all face at some time or another, be it fitness or personal.

You see, we all have to face adversity at some time or another.  It could be at work, in a personal relationship or during a workout. And how we deal with that adversity all comes down to how mentally tough we are.

That is why I LOVE to train.  It builds MENTAL TOUGHNESS!

In my own personal workouts, I love to challenge myself and break through barriers.

Are there times that I want to give up?

Of course there are!

Are there times that I want to quit and just collapse?

You bet!

But I challenge myself to dig deep and find my inner strength to forge ahead.

We are currently in a muscular endurance phase at Forever Fit SCV, my group personal training business in Valencia, California.  The training sessions are grueling with long work periods and very short rest periods.  Some of my clients feel like giving up, but they dig deep and push through.

They are building MENTAL TOUGHNESS!

In my mind, tough workouts are preparation for LIFE.  By finding the motivation and inner strength to push through something as insignificant (in the grand scheme of things) as a workout, you are proving to yourself that you have the power to overcome adversity.

Then it starts to snowball and pretty soon you are standing strong during anything and everything life has to throw at you.  As you continue to build that MENTAL TOUGHNESS, you will no longer be the kind of person that runs and hides when times get tough.

You will be the person that looks adversity in the face, smacks it and surges ahead.

Are people helping you or hurting you?

Are people helping you or hurting you?

Seems like a funny question to ask, doesn’t it?

We all think our friends and family are helping us, right?  But when you take a closer look at the people closest to you, you might be surprised.

An interesting way I heard it put the other day was you either have accomplices or friends.

Accomplices ‘aid and abet’ the crimes and bad habits that you currently commit and are trying to stop.  They might be your closest friends, but the truth is that if they are encouraging you to act in ways that contradict your goals and lead you off the path to success, they are accomplices.

Friends, on the other had, support you and help guide you on the path to happiness and success.  They encourage good behavior and steer you away from the pitfalls that you may find along your journey.

If you truly want to be successful and achieve your goals, you need to surround yourself with true ‘friends’.  But that doesn’t mean that you have to drop all accomplices.  Better yet, sit down with your accomplices and share your goals with them.  Let them know that if they see you doing something that is not in line with your goals, it is ok for them to stop you.  For example, if you are out at a restaurant and are about to order something that will not get you closer to your goals, let them know that it is ok to recommend a better choice.

Try to turn those accomplices into friends.  Turn them into supportive friends that will help guide you or cheer you along your path.  And the great thing is, you can do the same for them.

At the end of the day, we all WANT to be successful.  We just need some extra support and positive reinforcement to keep us focused.  That is the great thing about the ‘family’ at Forever Fit SCV, everyone is super supportive of each other.  Even on days people feel tired and drained, there is always a ‘friend’ there to encourage them and keep them moving forward!

So ask yourself today, are the people closest to you helping you or hurting you.  If they are hurting you, have a chat with them and let them know.

If they are helping your, say thank you and do the same for them!
